It has become one of the North Coast 500’s best known destinations and has even seen Princess Anne make a pit stop.
And now the Applecross Inn, in Wester Ross, could be yours after the owner calls time on running the popular establishment.
Judith Fish, 70, has put the business up for sale as she retires from the Inn she has run since 1989.
Under her stewardship the Inn, which is on the shore of Applecross Bay, has been transformed from a traditional Highland bar into what it is today.
Ms Fish, who was made an MBE in the 2019 New Year Honours for services to tourism and the local community, said: ‘After 38 years running Applecross Inn, and reaching a milestone age, I feel the time has come to accept retirement and take advantage of all the fabulous offers I have received over the years to be a guest all over the UK and beyond and take some time to myself.
‘It will be hard as the Inn is my whole world and life.
‘I really hope that whoever takes over embraces the role and fabulous community as I have enjoyed doing.’
Tourists on the hugely popular NC500 often stop off at the Inn, as did Princess Anne when she visited Applecross earlier in the year.
It has also won national acclaim, named among the Good Food Guide’s 100 Best Pubs and BBC Countryfile Magazine’s Pub of the Year.
While Ms Fish has run the Inn since the late 1980s, the history of the property is much older than that.
When it first opened its doors in the early 1800s, the Shore Street business was known as the Temperance Hotel.
The earliest recorded proprietor was Alexander MacRae, who was a local councillor, shopkeeper, postmaster and publisher of postcards, who ran the hotel until his death in 1927 at the age of 91.
Even then it was held in high regard, having appeared in the Michelin Guide as early as 1911.
Since Ms Fish started running the business around 35 years ago she has transformed it away from a primarily bar-led trade towards a food and accommodation.
Simon Fraser, business broker at Business Partnership, said: ‘Applecross Inn is one of the standout hospitality assets on the North Coast 500 – a genuinely rare trophy freehold with a 200-year history and a run of national awards behind it.
‘Opportunities like this, in a location like this, come to market once in a generation.’
The Inn is on sale for offers in the region of £1.25million.
